The 2ndEUROPLAN National Conference took place on 9 March 2018 in Nicosia, Cyprus. The Cyprus Alliance for Rare Disorders – C.A.R.D – was the organiser.

The conference was organised at a timely political moment, following the appointment of a new Cyprus President, Mr Nikos Anastasiades, as well as the appointment of new members of the multidisciplinary national committee for rare diseases in charge of advising the MoH on RD policies and developing an Action Plan based on the National Strategy for Rare Diseases, adopted in November 2012.

The conference’s participants included representatives of Ministries, policy-decision makers, members of the European Parliament, healthcare professionals, academia, industry and patients’ representatives.

The EUROPLAN conference provided an excellent opportunity to ascertain the actions implemented since 2013, and identify weaknesses and challenges in the following areas (pillars of the National Strategy):

  1. Prevention and early diagnosis
  2. Diagnosis and Treatment
  3. Supportive Care and Social Welfare
  4. Registries
  5. Research

The conclusions and suggested actions were submitted to the Chairperson of the national committee for rare diseases (i.e the Director-General of the Ministry of Health).
